Vandals force $1.6 million spend on Gold Coast rail line

$1.6 MILLION will be spent by Queensland Rail on installing protection screens between Robina and Ormeau on the Gold Coast rail line to stop vandalism such as rock throwing, said Gaven MP, Alex Douglas.

Dr Douglas asked the Transport Minister in Parliament to provide the number of vandalism incidents and where they had occurred on the Gold Coast rail line in the past year.

"Objects deliberately left on the rail line which either damage or block the line pose serious safety threats for passengers and train crew," said Dr Douglas.

"Vandals also put themselves in danger when they trespass and cross the tracks, as their actions could result in serious injury or even death."

After Dr Douglas called on the Minister to fund a Gold Coast-based railway police squad last November, police officers were allocated to Robina train station...more

Nerang skateboarders risk their lives jay-walking busy road

Young skateboarders are risking their lives dodging heavy traffic whilst crossing Nerang Connection Road adjacent to Nerang Skate Park, according to Member for Gaven, Dr Alex Douglas MP.

Dr Douglas asked the Main Roads Minister in Parliament to undertake a walking audit of the illegal and dangerous crossing path taken by skaters adjacent to the Skate Park (Arthur Earle Park).

"Local motorists have called for construction of a pedestrian crossing or walk-over bridge, after near miss incidents as pedestrians continue to ignore road rules," said Dr Douglas.

"Nerang Connection Road is an extremely dangerous road to cross, as not only do youth use this skate park after dark, motorists look for cars as they merge off/on the motorway ramp, taking their eyes off the road for a split second...more

Violation of planning policy at Gold Coast Fire Brigade HQ

THE Gold Coast Rural Fire Brigade Group site does not comply with planning policy dealing with Bushfire in Queensland, Gaven MP Alex Douglas revealed in Parliament today.

Dr Douglas asked the Minister in Parliament why the Government would be planning to build on the Gold Coast Rural Fire Brigade Group site at Mudgeeraba when it does not comply with State Planning Policy.

"Currently State Planning Policy (0103) requires an adequate distance between buildings and vegetation for an emergency service facility, but at this site the vegetation distance breaches the policy considerably," said Dr Douglas.

"Is the Government so far deep in debt that they are now placing emergency service workers, many whom are volunteers, in danger to cut costs?

"Others have also suggested that the Minister's department is attempting to pass off a training room as a 'storeroom' to avoid compliance...more

Locals claim win on Nerang-Broadbeach Rd cycle-way

AFTER years of lobbying for better cycle-ways along our main arterial roads, locals can now shout a small hooray for Nerang-Broadbeach Road, said Gaven MP Alex Douglas.

Dr Douglas said the cycle lanes which will cost $660,000 will be constructed from Olsen Avenue to Lawrence Drive, Nerang.

"Residents have long fought for designated cycle lanes on our main arterial roads to encourage more residents to use cycling as a means of travel in their daily lives," said Dr Douglas

"Cycling promotes cleaner roads and healthier hearts and with more designated cycle-way we encourage safety and corporation between cyclists, motorist and pedestrians...more

Nerang Police: Our hardest working officers

NERANG Police Division has the highest rate of computer-aided dispatches (call-outs) per officer compared to any other state division, said Gaven MP Alex Douglas, in Parliament this week.

Dr Douglas said that despite the recent allocation of two new officers to Nerang Police Station, the Coomera District had only one police officer to every 1800 people compared with the state average of 1:454.

"If the Government seriously believes that they can do a short police blitz in Surfers Paradise and all our problems will be fixed - someone needs to tell them they're dreaming," said Dr Douglas.

"Police are so busy responding to call-outs related to the crime crisis here on the Coast that they cannot undertake standard and proactive policing such as RBT units and patrolling our streets.

"The causes of much of the violence and crime on the Gold Coast is and was predicted: Labor's response is too little and too late."

DEDICATED BEV WINS 2011 SENIOR OF THE YEAR

TIRELESS dedication to our community made Beverley Boothby a most worthy recipient of the Gaven electorate's 2011 Senior Citizen of the Year, said Gaven MP, Alex Douglas.

Dr Douglas announced Mrs Boothby as the winner of the award at a Seniors Week Morning Tea he held in Nerang, after being flooded with outstanding nominations.

Mrs Boothby, who has just turned 83, has served the Nerang Red Cross for 29 years, and other community groups such as the Nerang RSL Legacy Auxiliary.

"Beverley has dedicated her life to our community, particularly in her role as Secretary for the Red Cross. Secretary is a position in community groups that is often over-looked, which makes her a perfect recipient of this award," said Dr Douglas.

"Just last year, Beverley was instrumental in raising $40,000 for the local Red Cross branch, which is an amazing feat for any local community group.

"Beverley is a hard-worker, cooking for fundraiser drives, as well as cleaning and ironing clothes for the op-shop she keeps extremely tidy here in Nerang...more
